I started this day in prayer and reflection and giving thanks to a Father that loves us unconditionally. He meets us whether we are in the valley, on the mountain top, or on a park pathway. This week as students left for Thanksgiving, I reminded them that the day is not all about the bird and the fixings. It is about taking the time to stop, smell, and see what is and has been right in front of them. It is about pausing to appreciate the very things and people that are taken for granted. Students became very quiet when I said, “You are rich beyond measure, and that has nothing to do with your parents’ money, what you own, or where you live.” I challenged them to reach out to an elderly neighbor or a single mom. I also challenged them to pause and look around the room with relatives that love them and food that has been prepared by hands of love. Think about others that will depend on a shelter to give them a meal today or those that will not receive a meal at all. Think about those who will not be seated at the table this year. They were speechless.
Sometimes we need to be challenged to step out of our comfort zone and put someone else first. Isn’t that what Jesus did constantly? He fed thousands, healed many, forgave all, extended mercy and grace, and gave His life. He never complained; He never said that He didn’t have time. What small token of love and thanksgiving can you extend to someone today?
Today, I will visit my mother and all of the ladies and gentlemen that reside on her hall. I will visit my dear friend’s dad who is spending his first Thanksgiving without his daughter in a new place because this year, she will not be at the table. She will be seated at the table with the Lord. Later this evening, I will have conversations with friends about their day. Understand, kindness is easy. It is a heart condition that should be overflowing. There is comfort in knowing that someone is smiling because you cared. Sometimes it’s the little things that become a game-changer. Be blessed this Thanksgiving Day!
