Legacy Letters #3

My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding… (Proverbs 5:1)

My dear son/daughter,

I hope at the writing of this letter that you are well. As you know, you are in my thoughts daily, and I want to continue to impart some pearls of wisdom so that you may live a fruitful and fulfilling life. “…be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding, that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge.” (Proverbs 5:1).

As you journey into adulthood, it is critical that you develop discernment when dealing with others. Everyone you encounter will not be a friend. You must watch for the wolf in sheep’s clothing whose sole desire is to pervert you from righteous living into the path of darkness. There is an evil delight in watching you fail or forsake your oath of obedience to God. Anyone who tries to lure you into a dark web of lies, deceit, and worldly living is not a friend. Be aware, for the dark path starts unknowingly with ugly speech, drunkedness, lustful thoughts, action, excuses, shame, regret, and hopelessness. Keep your footing straight, and do not stumble. “Keep your heart with vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you. Ponder the path of your feet; then, all your ways will be sure. (Proverbs 4:23-26).

As you make this journey through life, set boundaries for yourself and protect your character and reputation. Giving generously is noble, but it is acceptable to set boundaries so that others will not take advantage of you. On the other hand, do not become a nuisance in occurring debt that you know that you can not repay. Do not become a worthless person because “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make a haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers. (Proverbs 6:16-19). Please do not partake in this evilness, for you will not escape without scars, bruises, and never fading memories.

Remember to be consistent in following the path that the Lord has set for you. Never be afraid to say no or to stand on the branch alone when you are making the right decision. I shall put pen to rest, but know that my love for you runs deeply.
