In the midst of burnout in an ever-changing field known as education, God speaks. He always speaks, but the question is “Are you listening?” I am reminded that the Lord speaks and most often through the mouth of babes. Monday was a busy day as educators were trying to prepare to teach students, handle duty, and cover other classes in the midst of a teacher shortage. In the middle of my busyness and thoughts, a student stopped by my desk to ask a question. No, the question did not pertain to grades, class content, or school business. But it was a question that made me stop and look at him. He said, “Good morning, I know you’re busy right now, but whenever you have some free time would you mind sharing your testimony with me?” Wow! How many times has a 10th-grader walked up to you to ask you to share your testimony with him? At that moment there was only one answer. I said, “Sure.” I did ask the student, “Why did you ask me for my testimony?” He said, “I have watched you, and it just seems like you have a testimony to give.” This was where my thoughts took on a whole new direction.
I forgot how tired I was or that I was not looking forward to today’s lesson. I forgot about any other thoughts or obstacles that had invaded my train of thought. I did, however, think of the student who had just asked me the question. What struck me the most was that this was not a student in any of my classes; I have never taught him. I found it interesting that he would ask me for my testimony. There are over 100 other teachers in the building, but he decided to ask me. The student simply reminded me that it is not about how religious you are or how much bible knowledge you have. It is about seeing Christ in you! I was reminded of a selection from a Christmas cantata entitled “Let Them See Christ in Me.”
Let them see Christ in me
Let them see Christ in me
Let me be His eyes of compassion
And His ears to hear their needs
Let them see Christ in me
Let them see Christ in me
Let me be His heart of boundless love
Let them see Christ in me
Throughout scripture, God spoke to people. He spoke to Moses giving him instructions on how to lead the people. He spoke to Ezekial giving instructions about the sound of the trumpet to save people. He spoke to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. He spoke to Elijah as he was on his journey. He spoke to David, Job, Noah and so many others. God spoke to Jesus! If our Father can speak to all of these people, what makes us think that He can’t speak to us too? While we may not hear the audible voice of God, He still speaks to us through His word.
2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. (2 Timothy 4:2)
27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. (John 10:27-28).
Sometimes God speaks through dreams, situations, and through other people. Yes, even children. I am not sure if this day was for me to really give my testimony as much as it was a message that no matter how tired I am, perseverance is key and that God is right there with me in the middle of it all. The symbolism in this exchange became the student as a representation of a bright flower growing in the midst of snow, ice, and chaos: a beacon of light and hope. It is also a reminder that no matter what the mood or situation may be, someone is always watching, and they are looking for genuineness in your personality, attitude, and spirit. I am reminded that people should see Christ in us daily and that God also speaks in our actions. Yes, He speaks.
