Good morning friends,
Don’t smile and wish me well and tell me that I’m special when what you really mean is “you don’t have a life.” Don’t tell me about your concerns and deep feelings of care when what you really mean is “poor thing, you’re all alone.” I don’t want to be remembered as an entity consumed with a job or as having nothing to define my existence. Who is there to share my thoughts, passions, and fears? Who is there to nurture, sculpt, love, and carry on my legacy? Here I am. I sit among you all, and yet, I am unseen, unheard, and alone. There are no real bonds that tie any of you to me. When your play day is over and your real-world begins, do you think of me or ever wonder if my real world has begun? Or, do you just assume that somewhere is a definition of my existence? Do you care, or do you just go through the motions? Not that it really matters.
Perhaps, I have gotten to the core of your existence. Are you starting to look inward and wonder? When was the last time you gave up luxury, helped a neighbor in the yard, or stopped to have a conversation with a stranger? Do you rate your success based on how little the next person has, and do you ever stop to give to charity? I sit amidst everything that you do at every moment of the day, but do you feel compelled to address me? Sometimes I think that I cross your mind, but as you think of me you put me away into the bottomless, garbled recesses of your mind. It’s hard to compete when you give me so little reason to live.
Funny, I must share with you that underneath the rubble of corruption, greed, self-centered consumption, absent-mindedness, and sheer and shallow attitude. I exist. I am here with or without your approval. You don’t have to use me. You don’t have to talk to me, but you need to know that I am present and blossoming within the best and the worst of you. I’m not going away. What will it take for you to acknowledge me: a trip, a defining moment in life, a midlife crisis, a financial loss, a natural disaster, a tragedy, or a child? When will you awaken and confess and accept me as a part of your life? If you have been moved a little or a lot, you have finally come to the resting place and the reason for why we gather here today.
We have assembled here today to pay tribute. I welcome you here not to mourn loss or death, but to celebrate the spirit and the awakening of my existence among all of you. It is a wonderful feeling to know that there is a depth that runs through what once seemed like ice-cold veins and that you have not tossed me aside like a piece of used, discarded trash on the side of the street. Thank you! It is essential that we understand how we arrived at this point today. You finally took the time to welcome me into your life. You defined my existence. You gave me a reason to live. You have embraced me, nurtured me, and loved me. Because of these actions, your life is filled with meaning and purpose. This is an important time in our lives because we have captured the underlying truth of the message that we send out to others. I congratulate your acceptance and your accomplishments and rejoice in your discover. Never forget me and never let me leave you! Always find a place for me in your lives!
As you leave this place today, lift your heads and allow your spirits to sing for we are no longer facing a self-absorbed loss. WE HAVE AWAKENED! Thank you for being here today my friends, for I am sure that we always meet.
Signed in recognition of truth and love,
You friend,
Compassion!!
We can’t lose sight of fulfilling the second greatest command that we love one another, especially during this time. Loving one another means doing acts of kindness and caring for our brothers and sisters. It is so easy to get caught up in our own lives that we forget about checking on friends and neighbors. 1 Peter 3:8 states, “Finally, all of you be of one mind, sympathetic, lovers of your fellow believers, compassionate, and modest in your opinion of yourselves.” Let your cup overflow with compassion!
