Think about this. How does the worth of an object or a human being change depending on whose hands it’s in at the moment? Why is there truth in this question? A friend recently messaged me a video clip by John Maynard. He wanted to share something that his father had passed on to him. Mr. Maynard gave a series of examples about the value of things depending on whose hand it was in at the moment. Read what he said.
“Have you ever had someone send you something that was too good not to share, but too much to type? I got something from my dad, and I thought it was awesome!”
“If you take this basketball and put it in my hands, it’s probably worth $15, but if you put this basketball in the hands of LeBron James, it’s worth 30 or 40 million dollars.”
“If you take this football and put it in my hands, it’s worth ten or eleven dollars, but if you put this football in the hands of Peyton Manning, it’s worth fifty or sixty million dollars. It depends whose hands it’s in.”
“If you take this golf club and put it in my hands, it might be worth fifty bucks, but you put it in the hands of Tiger Woods, it’s worth about eighty million. Again, it depends whose hands it’s in.”
“If I had a stick or a rod in my hands, I might beat away an animal or a wild animal or something trying to come at me, but you put it in the hands of Moses, and he parts the Red Sea.”
“You put a slingshot in my hand and it becomes a kid’s toy, but you put it in the hands of King David, and he slays a giant with it. You see, it depends whose hands it’s in.”
“Two fish and five loaves of bread would feed me with some bread left over, but you put it in the hands of Jesus, and He feeds thousands. It depends on whose hands that it’s in.”
“If I had a couple of nails in my hands right now, I’d probably build you a birdhouse if you’re lucky, or I might nail down a piece of wood, but you put them same nails in Jesus’ hands, and it leads to salvation and eternal life for folks who love Him. So you see, it depends on whose hands that it’s in.”
“Your worries, your cares, and the things that have got you stressed out, if you leave them in your hands, that’s all they are ever gonna be. But if you put them same worries and cares in the hands of Christ, He will see you through them. He’s going to take care of every need that you got.”
“Just remember that it depends on whose hands it’s in. Take everything you’ve got and give it to Christ, and He will take care of the rest. Have a blessed day!”
Wow! Something as simple as a tangible object is so basic in one pair of hands, and yet in another set of hands, it becomes essential, valuable, and prize-worthy. Look at the simplest object; when put into the right hands saved the captured, defeated the giant, and fed thousands. But what about the intangible objects like self-definition, self-worth, beauty, trust, and faith. Whose hands do you place these intangibles in to make them important, valuable, and price worthy? Do we seek approval and acceptance from friends, coworkers, parents, mates, or strangers? If that’s what we are doing, we need to ask ourselves why are we giving someone else the power to define us, our worth, and our beauty? It truly depends on whose hands are holding these influences.
At some point, we have all been defined by someone else. Perhaps grandparents have referred to you as “the good girl,” “the smart one,” “the favorite,” or “the quiet one.” If we hear something often enough, we believe what we are being called, take ownership of it, and then act it out. You may have been told that you’re dumb, you’re unattractive, you’re weird, you’re worthless, or you’re unloveable. See, we become what we hear. Ask yourself this question, from whose hands did these insults come?
If you were to place these labels of not being good enough, smart enough, worthy enough, or pretty enough into the hands of another human, the value is worth $0. Isn’t it interesting that the value or lack of value is how we feel and what we internalize? Suppose you were to place these same hurtful labels into the hands of Christ, He changes the value to priceless as He tells you, “I[You are] am the daughter of a King who is not moved by the world. For my God is with me and goes before me. I do not fear, for I am His.” He also reminds us that we are “…fearfully and wonderfully made.” Remember, it really does depend on whose hands it’s in always.
